........ MOUNT YASUR VOLCANO.
Mount Yasur is one of the most active volcanoes and has been in fairly continuous Strombolian and mild Vulcanian eruption for at least 700-800 years. The mainly unvegetated Volcano, with a 400m wide summit which is nearly circular is located at on the south eatern section of Tanna Island. It is termed a Stratovolcano for the alternate periods of activity associated with it (Strombolian and Vulcanian actions).
Stratovolcanoes .................. Stratovolcanoes are composed of lava flows and other ejecta in alternate layers, the strata that give rise to the name. They are are made of cinders, ash and lava. Cinders and ash pile on top of each other, lava flows on top of the ash, where it cools and hardens, and then the process begins again.
Strombolian Volcanic Activity .... Strombolian activity is denoted by short-lived, explosive outbursts of lava ejected into the air. They eject relatively viscous basaltic lava from the throat of the volcano due to a build up of high gas pressures, which fragment the lava, the end result is periodic explosions with booming blasts. Typically, strombolian explosions eject bomb- and lapilli-sized fragments that travel in parabolic ballistic paths before accumulating around the vent to construct the volcanic edifice. Typically, these eruptions form scoria cones composed of basaltic pryoclasts.
Vulcanian Volcanic Activity ........ Vulcanian eruptions occur as a series of discrete, canon-like explosions that are short-lived, lastingminutes through to hours, usually with fast ejections of bombs and material. Once the volcano "clears its throat," however, the subsequent eruptions can be relatively quiet and sustained. Vulcanian eruptions are more explosive than Strombolian eruptions with eruptive columns commonly between 5 and 10 km high.
....... PORT RESOLUTION TODAY.Today, Port Resolution is a popular amongst yachties as one of the four entry points into Vanuatu. Port Resolution is an excellent natural harbour sheltered from the prevailing south easterlies, and in the peak season is believed to host between ten and a hundred yachts at any day. It remains unspoilt however as land access is difficult and consequently its vast scenic panorama, and natural beauty remain much as it was in Captain Cook's day.
On top of this there is a number of added attractions, with an outstanding white sand beach, the'best beach' on Tanna, located on the oceanside of its southern arm. Spending at least an hour here is well worth a visit to Port Resolution alone. On top of this, on the northern arm, both on the inner harbour beach, but to a greater extent along the rugged outer coast, a number of fumaroles occur which are unpredicatable and can display quite violent spouting of extremely hot water and steam. They are offshoots of the main Mount Yasur activity and in the past local villages used them for cooking.
